MWALIMU NYERERE IDEAL CLUBS ACTIVITIES
In a bid to entrench and strengthen Mwalimu Julias Nyerere ideas, thoughts and values among the youth, the chair has established school-based Mwalimu Nyerere ideal clubs in secondary schools, Tanzania mainland. So far, a total of 32 ideal clubs have been established. A part from participating in public debates at the university, students from ideal clubs have been continuously given opportunity to attend the annual Mwalimu Julias Nyerere intellectual festival held at the university. This has given opportunity for young people to understand Mwalimu Nyerere, emulate his values and replicate to other young people in the society.
1. Lauch of Mwalimu Nyerere Ideal Clubs
The Makongo secondary School organized a launch of New Mwl Nyerere Secondary schools clubs. This lauch was held at Azania Secondary school on 28th May, 2016 and the Guest of Honor was Honorable Mayor of Dar es salaam city Mr. Charles Mwita.
2. Public Dialogue
The Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Professorial Chair in Pan-African Studies hosted a public dialogue on “Youth Employment, Industrialization and Pan-African Unity” held on Monday 25th April, 2016 from 3.00 Pm -6.00 Pm, as part of the commemoration of 2016 Muungano day,
The Makongo secondary School, on 25th Mach, 2017 hosted a public dialogue on VIJANA NA UNYERERE 2017- “MWALIMU NYERERE NA MAENDELEO, AFRIKA, KABLA NA BAADA YA UHURU”. The Guest of Honor/Main speaker was Prof. Issa Shivji.
On 14th October, 2016, the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Professorial Chair in Pan-African Studies hosted a Poetry Competition among secondary school with Nyerere ideal clubs located in Dar es Salaam and Bukoba regions, to commemorate the death of the first President of the United Republic of Tanzania and the Father of the Nation Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere. Mwl Julius K. Nyerere died on 14th October, 1999. The main objective of the competition was to entrench and strengthen Mwalimu Julias Nyerere ideas, thoughts and values among the youth through poem writing and reciting as Mwalimu himself was an accomplished poet who wrote various poems with the view of empowering the community and fighting for social justice. The theme of the competition was “MWALIMU JULIUS NYERERE NA MAENDELEO YA WATU MASHINANI” meaning “MWALIMU JULIUS NYERERE WITH GRASSROOT DEVELOPMENT”. This competition was held at university of Dar es Salaam main campus, at Nkrumah Hall and at Rugambwa secondary school in Bukoba. A total of 14 secondary schools from Dar es Salaam and 4 secondary from Bukoba participated in the competition. The first prize for individual category went to Chang’ombe secondary school with 82.6 points, followed by Kigogo secondary school with 78 points, and the third position went to Relini secondary school with 75.6 points. Similarly, for group category, the first prize was taken by kibasila secondary school with 78 points, the second position went to Kisutu secondary school with 76.3, and the third position was taken by Relini secondary school with 76.3 points. The winners were handed over with various prizes including trophies and certificates.
