Welcome to the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Professorial Chair in Pan African Studies website!

This Chair was established by the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, in 2008 to honour and promote the thoughts and ideals of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, a greatleader, nationalist, Pan-Africanist and first President of the United Republic of Tanzania. Spurred by an unshaken belief and commitment to human rights and the right of all people to live in dignity, Mwalimu Nyerere devoted his entire life to uplifting the welfare of the poor and downtrodden.

We invite you to be part of a continuing discourse to analyze, debate, and interrogate Mwalimu Nyerere’s legacy and contribution to the theory and practice of human development. We welcome you to share ideas on what lessons can be learnt from Mwalimu Nyerere’s thoughts and ideals to contemporary society in Africa and beyond as well as your own reflections on Africa’s development direction The Mwalimu Nyerere Professorial Chair in Pan African Studies of the University of Dar es Salaam was established in April 2008, in honour of the great nationalist, pan - Africanist leader and first President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere. The first five – years of the Chair have witnessed rigorous intellectual discourse which has brought together intellectuals from across Africa to reflect on pertinent development concerns for the African continent. This phase was steered by Professor Issa Shivji who was the first Chair holding the position from 2008 to 2013. Profesor Penina Mlama is the current Chair, appointed to the post in 2014.
